Daltonganj Catholic Diocese was formerly a part of Ranchi Archdiocese. It was constituted and established as a separate diocese in June 5, 1971, for the Pastoral, Educational, Medical, Social and Cultural development of the Target population of the civil district of Palamau and Hazaribag. The Archdiocese of Ranchi remains as its Metropolitan. In the month of April 1995 the need was felt for further division into Daltonganj-Hazaribag dioceses for better and closer monitoring of the work.

The first bishop of the diocese was Rt. Rev. George Victor Saupin S.J. who was transferred to the diocese of Bhagalpur in Dec. 1987. Fr. Charles Soreng S.J. was consecrated in February 1990 as its second bishop, but was transferred to Hazaribag at the bifurcation from Daltonganj in 1995. In January 1998. Fr. Gabriel Kujur S.J. was consecrated as the third bishop of the diocese of Daltonganj. In between the diocese was run by two administrators – Fr. Maurice Dullard S.J. and Fr. Deonis Dungdung.

Now Daltonganj Catholic Diocese comprises of three government administrative districts–Palamau, Garhwa and Latehar. It is situated in the north west corner of the newly formed Jharkhand state. It is spread out over 12747.59 Km2 (4920 Sq. Mi).

Out of total population the Catholics consists of 67371, other 12 Denominations consists about half of the total Catholic population and rest of the population are Non- Christians. The languages Spoken among the Christians are- Hindi, Oraon, Mundari, Kharia, Nagpuri and other minor tribe’s languages like – Korwa, Birjia, Parhaiya etc.
